COURT action over plans to redevelop Port Kembla's No 6 jetty will not stop work on the $9 million project.

Port Kembla Gateway wants to build a storage shed, hopper and conveyor system to speed up the loading of copper concentrate on export ships and it received Wollongong City Council approval in July.

Four companies, Independent Cement and Lime, CBH Resources, Manildra Park and SCE Group have lodged a Land and Environment Court action opposing the consent.

Both the council and Port Kembla Gateway are named as respondents.

The matter was mentioned in court on Wednesday but has been adjourned until February 1.

Port Kembla Gateway general manager Doyle Cook said site preparation work was underway and would continue without an injunction requiring it to cease.

"By February we will be fairly well along," he said.

The project has the backing of the council, State Government and environmental groups, such as Illawarra Residents Against Toxic Environments (IRATE).

Wollongong councillor Carolyn Griffiths said the State Government had played a role and should help cover the court costs, instead of burdening Wollongong ratepayers.

"This is big business and involves the State Government ... there would have been concurrent consents along the way with the Department of Planning," she said.
